Alcohol has given lasting memories to so many people, like...
A last car ride with a happy family until a drunk killed the parents.
A family get together, standing at the open grave of a teenager who will never graduate, marry, have children, because of the buzz found in a bottle.
Parents, children and siblings celebrating the last birthday of a loved one, just before alcohol rotted his/her liver.
Christmas, and birthday parties, and family times that never happened because booze spoiled it.
Trips to the police station and hospital, thanks to too much to drink.
Crying, screaming, cursing, beatings, abuse, infidelity, crude talk and behavior, as the result of a little snort.
Individuals, marriages, families, communities, nations have been ruined because people became the slaves of the LONG NECK, the SHOT, the ONE FOR THE ROAD, the ADULT BEVERAGE, the RITE OF PASSAGE.
It is true that the alcohol beverage industry has contributed greatly, But the contribution is primarily misery, suffering, death, brokenness.
It is amazing that folks will continue to drink alcoholic beverages after it has robbed them of family members.
It is amazing that folks will continue to drink alcoholic beverages even though it is a trap being set for their children.
It is amazing that the right to drink alcoholic beverages is more important than setting the standard of sobriety and self control, more important than leading children and grandchildren away from the dangers of alcohol.
And before anyone gets on their horse and start claiming to have Biblical sanction, you better rethink and restudy and reevaluate your faulty and foolish arguments. THEY JUST WON'T HOLD UP. You see, drinking alcoholic beverages is not done for the good of anyone. It is done for selfish pleasures.
A friend said that she had heard that the "strong drink" n the Bible was alcohol mixed with mercury, which was poisonous.

The Biblical directives concerning strong drink, whether wine, liquor or beer have nothing to do with the mixing of mercury. The drink is strong because it is is fermented and aged. I have taken some time to respond to your question, but that is because I wanted to research and weigh the evidence. God's word tells us that strong drink and/or wine was used medicinally, either as a painkiller, a sedative or used topically to cleanse wounds. This, of course, was before we had the medicines that are available now. Just as it is wrong to misuse drugs today, it was wrong to misuse strong drink in the Bible days.
Other than for medicinal reasons, strong drink and actually any intoxicant which results in misbehavior or incompetent performance was forbidden. Alcoholic beverage dulls the thinking, impairs the reason, confuses perception, reduces moral standards. These are all counterproductive to the dignity and discipline God requires of His children.
