God does give a vision (a view of what He wants to accomplish) and dreams (hopes for His will to be manifested).
Legitimate, God given visions and dreams are bigger than the person who receives them, even bigger than the local church that receives them. The visions and dreams that God shares with His people are supernatural in nature and they require miraculous intervention in order to take place. God calls us and leads us into service that is bigger than we are.
There are some people who dream big dreams and have big visions, but there is something wrong. The dreamer does not always dream the dreams of God or the dreamer sometimes hijacks the dreams of God for his own benefit.
We all need to dream God's dreams and envision God's vision. Those who are wanting to "live the dream" need to be careful concerning the person who is inviting you to share their dream. God addressed the issue of keeping our vision pure. In other words, we must keep our vision in submission to God.
God addressed this, through Moses.
Deuteronomy 13:1-4
1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
The passage goes on to warn us about joining with other people, even if they are loved ones or friends. Do not be joined together with those who are not submissive to the God of the Holy Bible. We must make sure that we are seeking and connected to the true and living God. We must make sure that our beliefs and actions are aligned with the God of the Holy Bible.
These false prophets and gurus may appear to be Christian, or they might be proponents of a secular dream (academic, political, financial, social). In any case, we need to be aware that there are people proclaiming a different Jesus, a different gospel and a different Spirit. In order to choose our leaders carefully, we need to have a personal and deep relationship with God; we must be thoroughly knowledgeable concerning His word; we must have full confidence in the people who lead and share in the vision.
This is part of the reason God designed the local church with sound doctrine and Spirit led pastors. God does not want us to prostitute our time, our abilities, our commitment to the building of a faulty kingdom.
