"PROOF TEXTING" IS USING SCRIPTURE TO SUPPORT A BELIEF.
IT CAN BE MISUSED. SOME PEOPLE PREFER HUMAN WISDOM INSTEAD.
While there is a need for scholarly studies, the fact is that scholars often twist Scripture in the name of academics. The best commentary on the Bible is the Bible.
I have seen highly educated teachers build arguments on tomes of research and win arguments in the name of scholarship. However, it still comes back to what God said. We can examine and explain a passage until Paul would not even recognize it.
When God's word seems to say one thing, through only one or a few verses, but God's word clearly and repeatedly says something different, then we should interpret that rare and - or vague passage in the light of the many clear passages which agree. Remember, the vague or rare passage is not wrong, it is simply difficult to understand or it stands alone. It must be understood in the light of the clearer passages. Entire systems of error are built on misused passages.
By the way, the clearer passages are the ones that openly agree with what the rest of the Bible says. The correct interpretation of a passage is not that which disagrees with the rest of Scripture, and reflects the wisdom and expertise of anyone other than a Bible writer.
